What is Expository Preaching?
The preaching style at Winterville FBC is expository. Dr. Al Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has defined expository preaching this way:
"Authentic expository preaching is marked by three distinct characteristics: authority, reverence, and centrality. Expository preaching is authoritative because it stands upon the very authority of the Bible as the word of God. Such preaching requires and reinforces a sense of reverent expectation on the part of God’s people. Finally, expository preaching demands the central place in Christian worship and is respected as the event through which the living God speaks to his people."
We believe the Bible to be the inerrant and inspired word of God Himself, right down to the biblical authors' choices of nouns, verbs, and grammatical constructions in the original biblical languages. Our preaching should reflect that belief. On a normal Sunday, our pastor will preach from a selected biblical text rather than on a selected topic. He will take special care to present the authorial intent and purpose of the text and then apply it to the life and experience of the church today.
